Following the Test and T20I squads for Ireland's tour of Bangladesh were announced, Ireland Men’s Assistant Head Coach, Gary Wilson, on Tuesday, emphasised the importance of a balanced squad for the multi-format series.

Ireland will travel to UAE for a week long camp before they arrive in Bangladesh. Wilson said, “We have a really important seven days in the UAE before we get to Bangladesh. We saw how beneficial that was to us the last time before we went to Zimbabwe, and no doubt that will be equally as important this time around.“

Speaking about the Test squad, Wilson expressed his strong belief of the squad being very well balanced. With five debutants named, he looks forward to seeing how they will fare in sub-continental conditions.

On Stephen Doheny’s selection he said, “Stephen has improved a lot over the last 18 months and has been quietly going about his work behind the scenes. He was given certain things to work on throughout the year and we really feel Stephen has worked on those and improved. There’s that coupled with the three domestic hundreds he scored this year, if I’m not mistaken. Stephen has put his hand up and hopefully he will get his opportunity to show what he can do for Ireland.”

With Cade Carmichael returning from a concussion injury, Wilson stated that he is in particular suited for the longest form of the game. Carmichael last featured for Ireland in May 2025 in the ODI series against West Indies.

Wilson has clarified that Tim Tector's role in the T20 squad is that of a top-order batter. Tim last played in the West Indies series in June this year where he was forced to the middle order to cover for the absence of Gareth Delaney and Curtis Campher. Ireland now have Ben Calitz available which will allow Tim to play in his natural role as a top-order batter.
