Scotland picked up an important win against Canada on Sunday in the Canadian-leg of the ICC Men’s CWC League 2 by comfortably defeating the hosts by seven wickets.
Scotland got a dream start after choosing to bowl first, dismissing both openers in the first two deliveries Brad Currie sent Ali Nadeem packing, before running out Yuvraj Sharma off the next ball. Canada's woes deepened when Josh Davey, making his return to a 50-over game after nearly six years out of the national side, took a wicket in his very first over, leaving Canada at 1-3 after just ten balls.
Later, Canada slumped to 32/6. It was only through some late fightback with Shreyas Movva (60), Saad Bin Zafar (29) and Jaskaran Singh’s (32) vital contributions that the hosts managed to extend their total to 184 runs.
Scotland's chase never looked under any threat, as Player of the Match and opener George Munsey scored an unbeaten 84 runs, taking full control of the chase.
Despite Kaleem Sana picking up two wickets in quick succession, with 21 on the board. Skipper Richie Berrington (64) joined Munsey as the pair put up a 146-run stand. The talk of the town, Tom Bruce, made his first appearance in Scotland colours after switching from New Zealand. The power-hitter left an impression on his debut as he finished the match off with a six.
Despite three games without a result, including their last fixture against Namibia, the defending champions of the 2019-2023 cycle find themselves in third place in the current edition (2024-26).
Scotland is on track to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup qualifier as one of the teams in the top four. They are one point behind the leaders, the USA. Scotland is also boasting the best net run rate out of all participating teams.
