Bangladesh wrapped up the Sylhet Test, securing an innings and 47-run victory on the fourth afternoon, despite Ireland briefly delaying the inevitable through a solid rearguard led by Andy McBrine. The visitors, 86 for 5 overnight, pushed the match past lunch thanks to a fighting seventh-wicket stand, but debutant Hasan Murad’s four-for ensured the hosts completed a dominant win to go 1–0 up in two match Test series.
Ireland’s hopes of extending the game deep into the day rested on McBrine and Andy Balbirnie, who showed grit in a 66-run partnership after early reviews went the visitors’ way. McBrine survived a couple of close calls before reaching a determined fifty, while Balbirnie, hampered by finger injury, worked hard for his 38 before being trapped lbw to Murad.
Bangladesh broke through almost immediately after lunch when McBrine miscued a pull off Nahid Rana to midwicket. With the last recognised batter gone, Ireland still found late defiance through Barry McCarthy and debutant Jordan Neill, who added 54 for the ninth wicket and kept Bangladesh waiting a little longer. Neill struck seven crisp boundaries in his 36, while McCarthy finished with 25 before becoming Murad’s fourth wicket.
Ireland were chasing shadows for large part of the Test, especially after second day's play when Bangladesh surged past the visitors' first innings total of 286, having lost only one wicket. All of Bangladesh's top four batters went past their 50, while opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy (171) and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (100) notched tons. Wicket-keeper batter, Litton Das, struck a 60 at number 6 as well.
With a massive 301-run lead, Bangladesh were miles ahead in the game. However, matters turned worse when for Ireland in their second essay. A middle order collapse in the second innings in the evening session of Day 3 saw Ireland crumble to 86 for five at close of play, leaving them staring at an innings defeat.
The Bangladesh spinning duo Taijul Islam and Murad bagged seven wickets between them in the second innings to underlined Bangladesh’s complete command across the Test. with their spinners finishing with 14 of the 20 wickets. The loss means Ireland's run of three consecutive Test wins comes to an end.
The second Test in Mirpur starts on 19 November.
