The race to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2028 gathered further momentum this week as Denmark emerged victorious at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier B, securing their place in the Europe Regional Qualifier.

Playing in front of home fans, Denmark produced a composed and consistent campaign to keep their World Cup dreams alive while underlining the growing strength and competitiveness of European cricket.

The Sub-Regional Qualifier B brought together nine nations, namely Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Gibraltar, Hungary, Norway, Romania, Serbia and Türkiye - all competing for a single qualification spot. With only the tournament winner progressing, every match carried significant weight, making Denmark's unbeaten run all the more impressive.

The hosts set the tone early in the tournament, with a dominant 108-run victory over Estonia, before following it up with another convincing 86-run win against Türkiye to seal top spot in Group B. Denmark's success was built on contributions throughout the squad. Captain Hamid Shah once again proved his mettle at the top of the order, finishing as the tournament's leading run-scorer with 156 runs, while Surya Anand spearheaded the bowling attack with five wickets during the group stage. Their performances provided the platform for Denmark to enter the knockout stage high on confidence.

The biggest test for the Danes was waiting for them in the final, where they ran into Romania. After batting ahead and posting 162/7, Denmark held their nerve in an extremely tense finish, restricting Romania to 156/8 to complete a six-run victory and punch their ticket to the next stage of qualification. It was a fitting end to a tournament in which the hosts consistently delivered under pressure and showcased the depth of talent within Danish cricket.

With this Denmark have become the second team to qualify for the Europe Regional Qualifier, joining Jersey, who won Sub-Regional Qualifier A in Cyprus earlier this year. Jersey impressed throughout their campaign, securing victories over Cyprus, France and Israel before defeating Guernsey in the final to become the first team to advance from the European qualification pathway.

Attention will now shift to the Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier C, scheduled to be held in Finland from 14 to 21 August. The tournament will feature Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Finland, France, Germany, Guernsey, Israel and Sweden, with only one team earning the final qualification spot available from the sub-regional stage. As seen in both Qualifiers A and B, the margins are expected to be fine, with every nation chasing the opportunity to extend its World Cup journey.

For Denmark, however, the challenge is only just beginning.

Their reward is a place in the Europe Regional Qualifier, where they will be joined by Jersey, the winner of Qualifier C, and three of Europe's strongest Associate nations, Italy, Scotland and the Netherlands all of whom received direct entry after participating in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. With World Cup qualification on the line, the Regional Qualifier promises to be the biggest examination yet of every team's ambitions.

The pathway itself highlights just how far European cricket has come. Associate nations across the continent continue to make significant strides on the international stage, whether through Italy's historic qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup, Ireland's memorable T20I series victory over India, or Denmark's latest success on home soil. Each achievement reinforces the growing depth of talent across the region and reflects the increasing opportunities now available to European cricketers.

A league like the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) is expected to play an important role in that continued growth by providing local players with the chance to compete alongside some of the biggest names in world cricket. The experience gained in leagues like the ETPL can only strengthen the players who, post-league, will return to represent their countries in qualification events such as these.
