Day 2 Stumps: Ireland trail by 378 runs
Bangladesh - 476 all out after 141.1 Overs
(Litton Das 128 Mushfiqur Rahim 106; Andy McBrine 6-109)
Ireland - 98-5 after 38 overs
(Paul Stirling 27 Andy Balbirnie 21; Hasan Murad 2-10)
Ireland lose five wickets while trailing by 378 runs, leaving Bangladesh firmly in control at stumps on Day 2. The hosts were dismissed for 476, with Andy McBrine claiming an impressive six-wicket haul.
Litton Das top-scored with a superb 128, combining for a 108-run partnership with Mushfiqur Rahim (106) and adding another 123 with Mehidy Hasan Miraz (47).
The highlight of the day was Mushfiqur Rahim joining an elite club, becoming only the 11th player in history to score a century in his 100th Test. The crowd erupted as the Bangladesh great ended Day 1 unbeaten on 99.
All ten Bangladesh wickets were taken by Irish spin bowlers:
Matthew Humphreys claimed the key wickets of Mushfiqur and Das, while debutant Gavin Hoey impressed with two on his first outing. Andy McBrine took the remaining six, as Ireland bowled Bangladesh out for the first time in the series.
There was early drama as Andy Balbirnie was adjudged out on the second ball, before a successful review saved him. However, Ireland’s reprieve proved brief.
Paul Stirling’s brisk 27 (25) came to an end when he was trapped in front after advancing down the pitch and missing the flick. He was the first of three batters dismissed LBW, with Cade Carmichael (17) and Harry Tector (14) falling in the same manner.
Balbirnie (21) fell to a thick inside edge, caught smartly by captain Najmul Hossain Shanto in the slips, before Curtis Campher was bowled for a duck.
Hasan Murad’s disciplined spell of 10 overs for two wickets strengthened Bangladesh’s position. Ireland remain 178 runs away from avoiding the follow-on, and Bangladesh will hope to make Stirling and McBrine resume their innings on Day 3.
