Day 3 Stumps: Ireland trail by 215 runs

Ireland -  286 and 86-5

(Paul Stirling 43 Harry Tector 18; Hasan Murad 2-8 Nahid Rana 1-26)

Bangladesh - 587/8 d after 141 Overs

(Mahmudul Hasan Joy 171, Najmul Hossain Shanto 100; Matthew Humphreys 5-170, Barry McCarthy 2-72)

Bangladesh continued their domination on Day 3 in Sylhet before declaring their first innings at a mammoth 587 for 8, stretching their lead past 300. Matthew Humphreys offered the lone bright spark for Ireland with a well-earned five-wicket haul, but his efforts couldn’t stem the hosts’ charge. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto led the way with the bat for Bangladesh, scoring a fluent century to drive Ireland virtually out of the contest. The visitors faltered in reply, finishing on 86 for 5, finding themselves 215 runs adrift of an innings defeat.

Ireland started the day by taking the second new ball and immediately Barry McCarthy found some zing. He struck twice in quick dismissing both the overnight batters. Mahmudul Hasan Joy fell first for 171 edging it to the keeper and Mominul Haque followed soon after, fending a sharp delivery to slips for 82.

Shanto showed intent from his first ball piling onto the Irish misery, the Bangladesh skipper scored a rapid century from 112 balls scoring 14 boundaries en route to his eighth in the format before being trapped in front by Andy McBrine two balls after. With the dismissal of Shanto, McBrine surpassed Mark Adair to become the highest wicket taker in Tests for Ireland.

Humphreys picked up wickets at regular intervals, dismissing the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim for 23 and putting an end to the Litton Das' rapid 60 off 66 deliveries, courtesy a stunning grab by Harry Tector at long-on.

The spinner went on to dismiss Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Murad as he picked up the second five wicket haul in his career. He eventually finished with figures of 5-170 and the 23-year-old led the team off the field.

In the final session of play, Bangladesh declared their innings, asking Ireland batters to begin their second innings, Balbirnie, was reportedly struggling with cramps meant, debutant Cade Carmichael stepped up the order to open with Paul Stirling.

Carmichael was undone early in the innings by Nahid Rana. A pacy inswinger, bowled at over 140 clicks, took Carmichael's inside edge before thrashing into the stumps. Stirling was looking good as he attacked the bowlers, while Tector chose to progress cautiously. However, bit of misfortunate and some sloppy cricket resulted in Stirling's departure.

Stirling's wicket opened the floodgates as it went from bad to worse for Ireland. Tector was trapped by Taijul Islam as Bangladesh claimed their third wicket. Murad struck twice, he had Curtis Campher caught in the covers while Lorcan Tucker missed the line of the delivery and was given leg before wicket by the TV umpire as Bangladesh reviewed on field umpire's call. McBrine was joined by Humphreys for the last few minutes before close of play with no update on Balbirnie's availability in second innings.

Ireland will need a miracle and a half to make Bangladesh bat again and stretch the game into final day.
