The Switzerland women’s cricket team is becoming a force to be reckoned with as they move from strength to strength. Their performance in the recently concluded tri-series in Luxembourg not only helped them claim the series against the hosts Luxembourg, and Austria, it also helped them extend their 100% win record in T20I matches since their debut earlier this year.
In the series opener, the Swiss defeated Luxembourg by 74 runs. Batting first, Switzerland set Luxembourg a target of 158 in 20 overs. Opener Amrita Sasidharan top scored with 63 at a strike rate of 98.4. However, it was 16-year-old star, Meghna Rajan, with a match winning performance making 51* from 40 deliveries with the bat. While in an only over that Rajan delivered, she claimed three wickets, giving away just two runs, ensuring a comfortable victory for the Swiss. The Luxembourg batting lineup crumbled for just 83 runs in the 15th over.
In their second match of the series, the Swiss played against a determined Austrian side, resulting in a thrilling last-ball victory for them. Batting first, Austria scored 145/6 in 20 overs. Andrea-Mae Zepeda top scored with 77 from 63 deliveries. Walking in at 6 for 1, Rajan stepped up once again, anchoring the Swiss chase with a brilliant 63 of 65 deliveries. The Swiss chased the target with one delivery remaining, achieving a 6-wicket win.
The 3rd place play-off was shortened to a 10-over match due to rain. Luxembourg secured an 8-wicket victory over Austria with one ball remaining, earning their spot in the final against the undefeated Switzerland team.
The final of the tri-series saw Luxembourg bat first. Excellent bowling displays from Mundra Parinitha and Rajan restricted the hosts to 81/8 in 20 overs. Parinitha took two wickets while Rajan took a wicket at an economy of 1.25 from her four overs. The young Swiss talent then starred with the bat scoring a quickfire 26* from 19 deliveries helping Switzerland chase the target in 10.3 overs. The vice-captain’s dominant display with the bat and ball earned her the Player of the Match award.
Rajan concluded the series as its leading run-scorer with 140 runs, which also represented her batting average for the series. This performance significantly boosted her career batting average from 126 to a jaw dropping 130.66! With four wickets to her name, she was also the second amongst the leading wicket-takers of the series.
Other standout performers of the series were Austria captain Priya Sabu and Swiss opener Amrita Sasidharan finishing second and third on the runs chart [116 and 106]. Swiss bowler, Mundra Parinitha, finished with five wickets ended as the leading wicket-taker of the series.
The Switzerland women's team's clinical performances with both bat and ball showcased not only their collective strength but also the emergence of young talents like Rajan, whose consistent all-round brilliance was instrumental in every match. With a 100% win record in T20Is since their debut, the Swiss women are rapidly establishing themselves as a rising powerhouse in Europe.
