Scotland go atop of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 standings after a crucial 55-run win against Namibia in a rain-interrupted match at King City, Ontario.
After major delays and total overs reduced to 24, Scotland skipper Richie Berrington elected to bat. Opener George Munsey continued his string of explosive performances, hitting six sixes in the innings, as many as all other players in the match combined. Namibia thwarted Scotland’s progress through Ruben Trumplemann’s twin strikes. Munsey was first to depart after he had made a rapid 59 off 31 balls, followed by Berrington, who fell for naught.
Trumplemann ended with bowling figures of 3-24, and combined with Bernard Scholz's 3-wicket haul, they managed to hold Scotland down to 164, with Brandon McMullen 27 and Tom Bruce 22 being other major contributors.
Having provided early breakthroughs against Canada a few nights ago, Brad Currie repeated the act against Namibia, striking in the first over of the match and adding another in his second over to put Scotland firmly on top.
Zane Green (27) and JJ Smit with a rapid (26) off 13 balls led a late fight back for Namibia. However, Chris Greaves snuffed out both JJ Smit and Green, almost single-handedly pulling the plug on Namibia’s chase. Greaves finished with the figures of 3-24 to his name as Scotland’s bowling prowess proved too strong for Namibia, skittling them out for 109.
Scotland will look to increase their grip on the top of the standings with a match against hosts Canada scheduled for Saturday. Munsey picked up his second Player of the Match in as many outings in Canada. Scotland find themselves in a very strong position to qualify in the top four and progress to the next stage of World Cup Qualifiers.
