Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai: Italy scripted history with a commanding performance, securing a landmark victory in their World Cup clash against Nepal.
The build-up to the fixture saw a late change in leadership, as Harry Manenti assumed captaincy duties after Wayne Madsen was ruled out through injury. Manenti won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that would soon pay dividends.
Italy struck early through Ali Hasan, who removed Kushal Bhurtel in just the second over to hand his side the perfect start. Nepal steadied themselves during the powerplay, reaching 46/1 after six overs. Aarief Sheikh lead a brief resistance top-scoring with 27 off 24 deliveries.
However, Italy’s bowlers gradually tightened their grip on the contest. Crishan Kalugamage emerged as the standout performer with the ball, delivering a clinical spell of 3 for 18 in his four overs. His wickets included Nepal captain Rohit Paudel, DS Airee, and Gulshan Jha, breakthroughs that halted any hopes of acceleration.
Ben Manenti complemented him superbly at the other end, returning miserly figures of 2 for 9 from four overs at a staggering economy rate of 2.25. The combined pressure applied by Kalugamage and Manenti ensured Nepal were bowled out for 123 in 19.3 overs, leaving Italy with a manageable target.
Defending a modest total, Nepal aimed to strike early and expose Italy’s batting. But the Italian openers had other plans.
Siblings Justin and Anthony Mosca produced a batting masterclass, dismantling the Nepal attack with authority and composure. The duo chased down the target without losing a wicket, sealing victory in just 12.4 overs.
In a statement performance, Italy outplayed a Nepal side that had impressed throughout the tournament, cruising to a comprehensive 10-wicket win and marking a historic moment in their World Cup journey.
