ICC Mens T20 World Cup 2026: Scotland called up late but now ready to compete more than ever

Home

Scotland’s road to the T20 World Cup has been anything but conventional. They weren't suppose to be here until last couple of weeks and then everything changed.

The Scots appeared to have missed out after finishing behind Netherlands, Italy and Jersey at the European Qualifiers in 2025, only for a last-minute call up in late January from the ICC to bring them in as replacements for Bangladesh, who withdrew over security concerns.

With barely a fortnight’s notice, Scotland have been forced into rapid preparation mode, but an eager group of cricketers with a reputation for rising to the occasion when given a chance will be looking to leave more than a mark.

Recent Form

Scotland have not played a T20I since their defeat to Jersey at the Europe qualifier in July.

Their most recent competitive cricket came in the 50-over format during Cricket World Cup League Two in Canada last September.

Preparation has largely been indoors over the winter, followed by last-minute travel to India for warm-up games against Afghanistan and Namibia as they look to get up to speed quickly.

Stars to Watch

Mark Watt – The experienced left-arm spinner heads into his fifth T20 World Cup. Known for his variations, detailed planning and unconventional lengths, Watt remains Scotland’s biggest control option in the middle overs.
Richie Berrington – The captain and heartbeat of the side. At 38, his leadership, calmness under pressure and ability to contribute across disciplines remain vital.
Brendan McMullen – Probably the most consistent performer for Scotland with the bat over the last couple of years along with George Munsey. His ability to control tempo and accelerate makes him a genuine game-changer.
