South Africa won by 6 wickets

Johannesburg witnessed another professional display of power-hitting and dominance by South Africa as the Proteas showed no signs of complacency, dismantling Ireland's batting order and cruising to their target with clinical efficiency completing a clean sweep securing the ODI series 3-0 against Ireland with a commanding six-wicket victory in the final game of the tour.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Ireland started promisingly with captain Gaby Lewis striking 64 runs from 80 deliveries.

She featured in a crucial 99-run second-wicket partnership with Christina Coulter-Reilly (37), who stepped in as wicket keeper in the absence of Amy Hunter from the squad. Lewis and Coulter-Reilly's stand set Ireland up for competitive total as they found themselves at 120-1 in the 26th over.

After the solid start, the turning point came swiftly with Lewis and Coulter-Reilly falling in consecutive overs without Ireland adding another run, Laura Delany followed suit as she was dismissed for a four-ball duck. Suddenly, a middle order collapse saw Ireland's promising start being wasted with the scorecard reading 120-4.

Leah Paul (30) and Orla Prendergast (21) briefly steadied the ship but South African bowlers, led by the economical 4-33 in 10 overs by Nonkululeko Mlaba picked wickets at consistent intervals effectively suffocating any momentum the visitors might have mustered with the last nine wickets falling with only 85 runs as the visitors were restricted to 205 all out in 47.3 overs

Everything skipper Laura Wolvaardt touches turns to gold has been the story of the series, after three catches in the first innings she topped off this historic series with her second successive century, chasing 206, Wolvaardt carried the bat en route 100* from 93 balls finishing the match and completing the century with a single.

Arlene Kelly was the pick of the bowlers for Ireland, and broke the opening partnership dismissing Brits (26) and later Dane Van Niekerk (10) however 206 fell short the hosts chased it with 106 balls to go and six wickets in hand.

What Lies Ahead for Ireland

The tour has provided valuable exposure and learning opportunities for the Irish outfit. Orla Prendergast in particular has demonstrated her growth as a world-class all-rounder, with consistent scores and valuable contributions with the ball.

Her 97 in the second ODI was one of the finest knocks by an Irish player, especially in away conditions against top side in South Africa.

Ireland's next assignment arrives swiftly as they shift focus to the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Global Qualifier scheduled for January 2026 in Nepal.

Having tested their abilities against one of the world's best teams, Lewis's squad will view this South African tour as a crucial build-up phase. Ireland have used this tour to build up rhythm after their lack of fixtures in recent months as now their sole focus turns to qualifying for the marquee tournament in England next year.
