As Ireland prepare for their upcoming Test tour of Bangladesh, it’s the perfect time to look back at some of the standout individual performances that have defined the team’s brief but spirited journey in Test cricket. From Kevin O’Brien’s historic century to Lorcan Tucker’s heroics in Dhaka, these moments capture the passion, and promise of Irish cricket on the world stage.
Kevin O’Brien: 118 (217) vs Pakistan at Malahide
Ireland's inaugural Test match in 2018 was an event brimming with anticipation and national pride, a significant milestone in the country's cricketing history. While the very fact of playing their first-ever Test was inherently special, it was the heroics of one man, Kevin O'Brien, that elevated the occasion from merely memorable to truly unforgettable. His brilliant 118 against Pakistan at Malahide etched itself into the annals of Irish sport, ensuring that the team's Test debut would be remembered not just for its significance, but for the remarkable individual brilliance that illuminated it. Though Pakistan went on to win by five wickets, O’Brien’s innings was a defiant statement of Ireland’s arrival in Test cricket.
Tim Murtagh: 5/13 vs England at Lords
Few cricketers know Lords as intimately as Tim Murtagh, and he produced a dream spell against England in 2019. His five-wicket haul in the first innings at the “Home of Cricket” marked the first-ever fifer by an Irish player in Tests. England were humbled to paltry 85 Despite England eventually winning by 143 runs, Murtagh’s performance was a masterclass in seam bowling on familiar turf.
Lorcan Tucker: 108 (162) vs Bangladesh at Dhaka
It is always special to score a Test century, but to do it on your debut in an away Test is stuff of dreams. Lorcan Tucker’s century in Dhaka in 2023 was just that. Packed with style and substance, Tucker's fluent 108 against Bangladesh made him the sixth wicketkeeper in Test history to score a hundred on debut and just the second Irishman to reach three figures in Test cricket. It also couldn't have come at a greater time for Ireland as defeat loomed large with the tourists reduced to 51 for the loss of five wickets. Though Ireland fell short by seven wickets, Tucker’s poise and maturity in testing subcontinental conditions were a glimpse of Ireland’s growing depth.
Andy McBrine & Mark Adair: 163-Run Partnership vs England, Lords
At Lord’s in 2023, Ireland were staring at defeat. They trailed England by 190 runs in second innings when the scoreboard read 162 for 6 with opener James McCollum retired hurt earlier in the innings. In an incredible display of resilience and grit, Andy McBrine and Mark Adair stitched together a record 163-run partnership, the highest for Ireland in Test cricket. The remarkable recovery ensured no innings defeat for Ireland as England had to bat again. Though the hosts went on to win by 10 wickets, the partnership showcased Ireland’s ability to compete at the highest level in the format against one of the top teams.
Mark Adair: 8/95 vs Afghanistan, Tolerance Oval, UAE
Mark Adair was instrumental in scripting history as Ireland secured their first-ever Test victory, defeating Afghanistan by six wickets in the UAE. Adair set the tone, removing Noor Ali Zadran and Afghanistan's batting mainstay, Rahmat Shah, in the same over, reducing the Afghans to 11 for 2 and went on to pick a five-wicket haul as Ireland wrapped up innings for 155. Once again, in the second innings Adair ripped through Afghanistan's top order, getting rid of three of the top-four batters, rounding off a match-winning performance of 8 for 95.
Andy McBrine: 90 and 4 Wickets vs Zimbabwe, Bulawayo
In Bulawayo, Andy McBrine delivered one of Ireland’s finest all-round performances in Tests. His unbeaten 90 in the first innings, followed by four crucial wickets, powered Ireland to a 63-run victory over Zimbabwe. It was a performance that underlined McBrine’s value as a dependable all-rounder capable of changing games with both bat and ball.
As Ireland gear up for another challenging Test assignment in Bangladesh, these performances serve as reminders of what the Men in Green can achieve. With a mix of seasoned campaigners and emerging talents, Ireland will look to build on these milestones and continue carving their legacy in the longest format of the game.
