On 7 August 2025, Zach Vukusic from Croatia etched his name in cricketing history as the youngest ever captain to lead a men’s national team in International cricket. At just 17 years and 311 days, he captained the Croatian cricket team in a T20 International Series against Cyprus, at the Mladost Cricket Ground in Zagreb.

For a young cricketer from a nation still nurturing its cricket roots, this was not only personal but a landmark for European cricket as a whole. Vukusic’s story highlights the pushing of barriers in European cricket. Vukusic broke the previously held record by France’s Noman Amjad, who led his country at 18 years and 24 days. 

What made this occasion more special was that in his first game as captain, Vukusic was the top scorer for Croatia, scoring 43 runs in 32 balls. Despite a loss, he rose to the challenge and showed his composure and maturity while still displaying his undeniable ability.

Vukusic first showcased his potential in 2024, making his international debut for Croatia against Belgium at the Bayer Uerdingen Cricket Ground in Krefeld, Germany. On his debut, he made 53 runs in 35 balls and took his first international wicket. He was awarded Player of the Match on his debut after leading Croatia to victory. Vukusic joined Somerset Academy to gain more county cricket experience and further hone his skills. Further showing his passion for the game.

His achievement is especially significant considering the developmental stage of cricket in Croatia. Croatian cricket has seen major growth in the last 25 years. In 2001, they became an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), laying the foundation for the growth of the sport before becoming an associate member in 2017.
